President Rumen Radev will hand the first mandate to form a new government on Jan. 12, in line with the constitution, the presidency said.

At 10 a.m., Radev will assign the mandate to the prime minister-designate nominated by the largest parliamentary group in the 51st National Assembly, that of GERB-SDS.

The move follows the resignation of Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov’s government on Dec. 11 amid the largest protests in Bulgaria in years.

The demonstrations were sparked by opposition to the policies of the GERB–BSP–ITN coalition government, which was backed by DPS–New Beginning.
